Nuance to showcase latest speech recognition solutions and discuss major European projects at WoHIT 2010

"Speech recognition: an important strategic tool in the EHR system"

Published: 03/11/2010

BARCELONA, SPAIN – (HealthTech Wire / News) – Nuance Communications, Inc., a leading supplier of speech solutions, today announced it will showcase the latest healthcare speech recognition technology at World of Health IT in Barcelona (March 15-18, booth 402). Visitors will get a chance to experience live how speech recognition integrated with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) can facilitate structured reporting, enhance user experience and increase the completeness and quality of medical records. The company will further present the achievements of major European hospitals with their speech recognition solutions, highlighting the factors for a successful implementation. (Industry Solutions Theater, Room/Booth 833, 17 March 2010, 2.30-3.15 pm).

“Nuance will take WoHIT visitors on a journey to the Galician Health Service, the NHS Trust Northumbria, Telemark Hospital in Norway, the University Hospital of Tuebingen in Germany and others. These organisations deliver living proof each and every day that speech recognition is a strategic tool and should be the standard method of information capturing in healthcare”, said Dewinder Bhachu, Director of Healthcare Informatics at Nuance.

Speech recognition in Spain: At the fore-front in Europe

During 2009 Spanish healthcare providers adopted speech recognition in large scale: Nuance Healthcare closed deals with the regional healthcare services of Aragon, Valencia and the Basque Country. Aragon and Valencia, which have already been using SpeechMagic have expanded speech recognition to their Pathology departments – in both cases integrated into the Pathology Application of Nuance partner iSOFT. The roll-out will start in the first half of 2010 and will affect nine hospitals in Aragon and seventeen in Valencia.

In the Basque region, Nuance has been put in charge of providing speech recognition to all hospitals. The first implementations were carried out in 2009 at the hospitals of Txagorritxu, Basurto, Galdakao and Cruces. This year, the roll-out is planned for the remaining Basque hospitals.

Historically, Spain is a very speech recognition-friendly country and the Galician region has been at the fore-front of introducing speech-based EHRs.

“I consider speech recognition an important strategic tool in the EHR system”, highlights Javier Quiles del Rio, Head of clinical IT for the Galicia Health Services. “Integration in the EHR and RIS is the key. Users can now start the speech recognition process from within their information systems with one mouse click, and this is very much appreciated. Many are asking for an even deeper integration. They want to use speech recognition for controlling the application itself”, he said.

The Nuance Healthcare headquarters in Spain are in Barcelona. The Director of the Southern Europe cluster, including Spain, is Javier Viver, who can be reached at Javier.viver@nuance.com. www.nuance.es/sanidad
