The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, chooses Radiology Information System (RIS) from Carestream Health

Published: 07/27/2010

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - (HealthTech Wire / News) - The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has signed a multi-year contract with Carestream Health to install the latest version CARESTREAM RIS across its two sites located in Chelsea, Central London and Sutton in Surrey, South London. Installation is scheduled to commence during the second half of 2010.

The Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) was the first hospital in the world dedicated to cancer treatment and research into the causes of cancer. Today the hospital with its academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research, forms the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe with over 40,000 patients from the UK and abroad seen each year. The Trust pioneers and innovates in all areas of cancer treatment and is a leader in its field.

The Trust invited bids to supply a RIS for the two sites back in August 2009, following up with a thorough evaluation process. The CARESTREAM RIS platform was short listed along with solutions from other suppliers and subsequently the contract was awarded to Carestream.

“Carestream’s version 11 RIS is an extremely configurable product which, when installed, will allow us to minimise RMH Radiology’s clinical risks with regards to requesting, scheduling, documentation and reporting,” said Mikki Grinstead, Radiology Services Manager, Diagnostic Radiology, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. “We look forward to working with Carestream on this project.”

The latest highly productive CARESTREAM RIS offers radiation dose tracking and user alerts, while critical results notification helps ensure confirmation of results delivery and appropriate follow-up by referring physicians. The RIS offers data collection and reporting capabilities that deliver gains in productivity for users and the system can also be used to track radiologic imaging exams and radiation therapy treatment.

In addition to enhancing patient care, the RIS also boosts efficiency by expediting scheduling of single, dual and series imaging exams across multiple locations—and is used to confirm eligibility and evaluate that procedure codes are consistent and accurate.

“Our new RIS offers an impressive set of features that are designed to achieve greater configurability, flexibility and workflow efficiency, especially across a multi-site environment like that of the Royal Marsden,” said Charlie McCaffrey, Managing Director of Carestream Health, UK and Ireland. “In addition, the ability to input dose measurements that are compared with user-defined thresholds was particularly beneficial to the Royal Marsden to minimise the potential for overexposure for enhanced patient care.”
